The
Dachau memorial (
KZ-Gedenkstätte) is in a suburb of Munich, 38 minutes from the Hauptbahnhof by S-Bahn and bus. It is very easy to get to by yourself.
- Just get on the S2 anywhere along the trunk line between Ostbahnhof and Laim, Richtung (direction) Petershausen and go to the Dachau station. Note: there is also a Dachau Stadt station on the 'A' line: that's not it.
- At the Dachau station you will have 10 minutes to find the bus to the Memorial. No problem. The bus (# 726) leaves from Haltestelle (bus stop) 2 in front of the station. The bus stop is well marked, in English.
- The bus to the Memorial takes 7 minutes. I don't remember how the Memorial is marked, but I had no problem telling when we got there.
- There are several guided tours during the day. Sign up for one (€3) at the desk. Or, if you like, they'll rent you an audio guide for about the same price and you can do the tour by yourself. In fact, you don't have to do any kind of a tour. You can just go in for free. But I would really advise some kind of tour.
Dachau is in the second tariff zone. A Munich XXL Tageskarte will cover all of your travel in the inner zone (Innenraum) and the second zone, on all conveyances (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, and buses) for the day. A Single XXL Tageskarte (for a single person) costs €7,50. For €13,10 you can get a Partner XXL Tageskarte for up to 5 people.
